Women continue to prove that they have what it takes to get into the driver’s seat. Yesterday, Madam Kamla Persad-Bissessar, then leader of the opposition, became the new Prime Minister elect of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, claiming the title of First Female Prime Minister of that country. This represents, among other things, another feather in the cap of women across the world, especially those who fought in the struggles for women’s liberation, equality and recognition. In terms of Caribbean political history and current politics, one cannot help but think whether this is the beginning of a political evolution, one which will encourage other Caribbean and Caricom women to run for the top office. Whatever this represents this much can be said: When a woman is in power, it’s no longer business as usual.
Hats off to Madam Persad-Bissessar.
