We often forget that children are also victims of the violence they witness in their homes. When daddy hits mommy or mommy yells at or hit daddy, each and every such episode has a lasting negative effect on the children who see this. We should not underestimate the long term, devastating effects of domestic violence on children. We need to raise our children in safe and nurturing homes, and not in homes where their physical, mental or emotional well being are threatened.
Witnessing violence between one’s parents or caretakers is the strongest risk factor of transmitting violent behavior from one generation to the next. Boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults. 30% to 60% of perpetrators of intimate partner violence also abuse children in the household.
