Joel is the kind of young man every mother wishes to have, every woman wishes to meet, every school hopes to tutor, every neighbourhood hopes he lives in. Not claiming him as perfection, though, perfect in God. He’s a man in his own league, destined for success, making his own footprints in the sand, reminding us that our young men can.

Whether you call him Joel, Joel Browne, Joey2Kool ( ’cause he’s real kool), or Young Browne, he is certainly a popular singing sensation in the Guyanese Nation and Atlanta, in the United States.

I remember him as the always-well-suited youngster, famous for almost infinitely carrying a note on the word “Amen” in the song, May the Lord Bless You and Keep You. Though the church service was usually holy-ghost-filled-and-mind-blowing, I have a sneaking suspicion that to hear kool Joel’s never-ending “Aaaaamen” is the ultimate moment everyone looks forward to. Needless to say, the congregation must miss him and his performance terribly whenever he is on travel.

But there is much more to this fine, talented, young man, raised in the church by parents Bishop and Prophetess Browne, leaders of a breath-taking, spectacular church in Georgetown, Guyana. Multi-talented, Joel writes, produces and sings his own songs. He gets competition too from his beautiful sisters, one of whom we hope to feature separately.

So let’s talk about Joel, surely on his way to stardom. He’s owns Joey2Kool Inc., his musical business and studio. He’s also Executive Producer, Writer and Composer of his and his sister’s first album, “Anoint Me Lord“, debuted last December.

The seven-track album is a mixture of contemporary, soca, reggae gospel and dancehall, as well as worship ballads.

Joel: “We have a whole lot of songs but we selected these seven because they are favourites in our church and we are hoping that Guyana will support this first venture.

This accomplishment was received with high praise and congratulations to the sibblings and their family. And one can understand this, because not everyday youths like Joel release an album, let alone a young, multi-talented pair of sibblings.

And check this: This young follower of Christ plays the saxophone, the drums, the keyboard, and the bass guitar! Now how about that for talent?!

Producing the album is not the first professional musical work for Browne. Having previously launched his singles, he can now be considered a veteran, particularly in the local musical industry. When Joel is not singing, he’s busy juggling young adulthood responsibilities and studying at the American International University. Having and managing his own recording studio is a huge plus for this 24 year old, especially in light of few musician’s resources in Guyana, bureaucracy for recording and launching, and the age-old copyright issues local artistes encounter.

Look out for the album in stores. In the meantime, get your original at the New Life Ministries Cathedral, Lance Gibbs Street, Q/town and Tele: 592-226-6695. Their next album should be released in August 2011.
